Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg
From the point of view of the Conference of Federal and State Ministers for Regional Planning (MKRO) metropolitan regions are: "Motors for social, economic, and cultural development with easy accessibility on a European and international basis and further radiation towards the urban area".
On 28th April 2005 the ministers’ conference for regional development planning decided to accept the region of Nuremberg in the circle of European metropolitan regions in Germany. This decision is of exceptional significance in that it opens excellent future prospects for the region. One of the important economic bases for the enhancement to a metropolitan region was, alongside the highly developed infrastructure and the extensive competence in research and technology, the strong potential resulting from the productivity of more than 120,000 companies.
With its 3.5 million inhabitants and a gross domestic product of more than 140 thousand million US Dollars the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is one of the strongest economic regions in Germany and ranks equal with nations such as the Czech Republic or Singapore.
